Exterior Painting

Exterior House Painting in Carteret County, NC

Salt, sun and wet air are rough on paint. We prep and paint coastal homes so the finish actually holds up to all three.

Why exterior paint fails faster at the coast

Paint near the water lives a hard life. Salt settles on the siding and trim, humidity keeps surfaces damp, and the summer sun cooks the south and west walls. When new paint goes on over salt, mildew or chalky old paint, it lets go early. You'll usually see it first as peeling trim and blisters on the sunny side.

So most of the work happens before the first coat. We wash the house, scrape and sand anything that's failing, prime bare wood, and caulk the joints where water likes to sneak in. Then we use coatings made for coastal exposure.

Adam has been painting in this climate for more than 20 years. He knows what this weather does to a rushed paint job, and he doesn't rush.

What's included in an exterior repaint

Washing

Salt, dirt and mildew come off first so the new paint bonds to the house, not the grime on it.

Scraping and sanding

Loose and peeling paint gets removed and the edges feathered so they don't show under the new coat.

Priming and caulking

Bare wood gets primed and open joints get sealed to keep water out of the walls.

Finish coats

Body, trim, doors, shutters and porch ceilings, with crisp lines where the colors meet.

What it costs to paint a house here

Most exterior projects in Carteret County land somewhere between $2.50 and $5.00 per square foot. Where yours falls depends on the size of the home, how much prep it needs, how high we have to work and the products you pick.

We'll be straight with you. A coastal house almost always needs more prep and a better coating than an inland one, and that's worth paying for. A cheap paint job that peels in three years isn't cheap.

Adam met with us first and listened to our wishes, and each job has been completed perfectly (and the house left clean). The crew is a bunch of great guys who get along well and work diligently. Planning the timing of an exterior job

Exterior work depends on the weather more than anything else. Paint needs a dry surface and a dry window after it goes on, so rain, heavy dew and very high humidity all play a part in the schedule. Spring and fall are popular for a reason, but good work happens year round when the conditions line up.

We'll give you a realistic plan, and if the weather changes, we'll tell you. A day's delay is a lot better than paint that didn't have a chance to cure.

Exterior painting questions

Is it too cold to paint outside?

Not always. When the surface temperature is 35°F or higher and you're using a quality paint made for cooler weather, the finish can perform as well as one applied at 70°F. Prep, product choice and timing make the difference, which is why it pays to have someone who's painted through plenty of coastal winters.

How much does it cost to paint a house in Carteret County?

Most homes here fall between $2.50 and $5.00 per square foot. Size, condition, how much prep it needs, how high we have to work and the products you choose all move that number. Coastal homes usually need more prep and a better coating than an inland house. The estimate is free and written out so you can see exactly what you're paying for.

How long will exterior paint last near the water?

It depends on exposure. The sides that face the water and the afternoon sun wear out first. Washing the house every year and touching up trim when you first see it break down will stretch the time between full repaints a lot.

Do you paint businesses too?

Yes. We paint commercial buildings as well as homes, from entry doors and trim to full exteriors.

Do I need to be home while you paint the outside?

No. Plenty of our customers are at work or out of town during exterior jobs. We'll just need access to water and power, and we'll keep you posted on how it's going.

What if some of the wood is soft or rotten?

We'll point it out at the estimate. Small trim and sill problems can often be handled as part of the prep, and anything bigger gets talked through before we start so there aren't surprises halfway through the job.
